ECLC Events and Updates

The ECLC organizes and invites all Lombardi early-stage investigators to join open events:

  • Lunch With Leadership (LWL) and Chat with Leadership (CWL) – An opportunity to speak openly, ask questions, and learn from the trajectory of current leaders at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Consortium.
  • Networking events – An opportunity to meet other faculty members, create or advance collaborations, learn about colleagues’ new ideas, or even just chat in a relaxed environment.
  • Workshops – An opportunity to enhance skills such as scientific writing (e.g., grant proposals, manuscripts) and leadership skills.

  • Presenting opportunities for Early Career Faculty Investigators – The purpose of this activity is to highlight innovative work by Lombardi early career faculty investigators and encourage engagement with senior faculty. This activity takes place monthly. We ask that interested investigators sign up to reserve a time slot at the next available LCCC Executive Committee Research Meeting.

The Early Career Leadership Council (ECLC) invites all early stage investigators at Georgetown Lombardi to join the following activities.

Presenting Opportunities

Early Faculty Investigators are invited to Present at the Georgetown Lombardi Executive Committee Research Meeting held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, starting at 9 AM ET.

Purpose: highlight innovative work and encourage engagement between early career faculty and senior faculty for potential collaboration.

Advance registration is required: Use the sign-up form to see availability and secure your preferred date to present. Dates currently available in October, November, and December.

Format: Investigators have 15 minutes to present at the beginning of the meeting. Presentations should be brief and follow the shared presentation template to include the following information:

  • Investigator’s research
  • Opportunities and pathways for collaboration
  • Plans for future directions 
  • Allow 5 minutes for Q&A and discussion

Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Executive Committee meetings:

  • This is the Research Focused Executive Committee Meeting 
  • Third (3rd) Wednesday of every month
  • Directed by Dr. Michael Atkins 
  • Fully virtual
  • Attended by senior faculty members of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (GU/MedStar/HMH-JTCC/CDI) 
  • You are welcome to attend the full meeting on the day of your presentation

Accountability Writing Group

Currently, only one group is running in New Jersey at Hackensack Meridian Health, Center for Development and Innovation, and led by the ECLC NJ Co-Chair.

This LCCC DC virtual Accountability Writing Group will open back upon request. Please send an email with your request. This group is for Early Career Investigators at LCCC/HMH/JTCC/CDI Early Career Investigators. This is an informal and participant-driven virtual space designed to:

  • Support consistent progress on grant writing
  • Create structured, protected writing time
  • Foster peer accountability and encouragement
  • Reduce isolation in the writing process

This is not a critique group or formal review panel—it is a focused writing and accountability virtual space.

“Lost in Translation” — Why Good Science Gets Lost in Grant Writing
Guest Speaker: Lisa Carter-Bawa, PhD, MPH, APRN, ANP-C, FAAN
Cancer Prevention Precision Control Institute (CPPCI) Director at the Center for Discovery & Innovation (CDI) @ Hackensack Meridian Health; and Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Director for Community Outreach & Engagement Deputy Associate.

During this informal conversation, Dr. Carter-Bawa will talk about the “Five Translation Gaps” and explain why most grantmanship training starts in the wrong place. Through her “Lost in Translation” curriculum, Dr. Carter-Bawa provides a roadmap to bridge these gaps. She will share practical, high-impact insights gained from her extensive experience writing and reviewing grants for both the NIH and PCORI.

Grant Writing Workshop

Planning and Writing a Competitive Research Proposal
Date: Monday, March 9, 2026
Facilitated online by: Alix Norris, PhD an NIH-funded scientist and experienced grant writer, and founder of TN Consulting.

Event Details:
Participants will learn proven strategies for success as an NIH applicant and apply these approaches through guided, hands-on exercises. The workshop will include practical guidance on planning a first R01, with a focused session on developing and refining the Specific Aims page. Dedicated time will be built in for individual and small-group practice, structured feedback, and discussion. Participants will also receive take-home tools and materials to support continued proposal development after the workshop.
