The role of negotiation in academic life extends well beyond salary to encompass service roles, author order, teaching responsibilities, and much more. In this interactive workshop attendees will practice thinking expansively about what can be requested and will learn the strategies used by the most successful negotiators to claim value while maintaining positive relationships. Because gender continues to make a salient difference in negotiations, we will review how it matters and will cover techniques to mitigate gender-based bias. After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

1.     Recognize the abundance of negotiable opportunities
2.     Differentiate between positions vs. interests
3.     Understand approaches that mitigate biases against female negotiators
4.     Prepare for negotiations by planning both strategically and emotionally
