Clinical Care

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 236,740 new cases of lung cancer (117,910 in men and 118,830 in women) in the United States in 2022.

The evaluation and management of lung cancer is complex, requiring a comprehensive approach with the involvement of experts from multiple specialties. It is exactly this multidisciplinary approach that Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and our clinical partner, MedStar Health, provide.

The Interdisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic Team consists of a core of medical and radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons, and pulmonologists, supported by diagnostic and interventional radiologists, pathologists, clinical and research nursing coordinators, case managers, social workers, and palliative care specialists. The interdisciplinary clinic allows patients to meet with many experts on one day, avoiding long delays between appointments. The team approach also allows for the development of a well-coordinated plan of care. Once a plan has been developed for an individual patient, patients can then receive the components of their care from individual physicians. The entire team of experts meets at a lung cancer tumor board on a weekly basis to discuss all new cases, and obtain input from the whole team.

Supportive Care

Our team of palliative care experts is available to help with a variety of issues ranging from pain management to end-of-life care. Additional psychosocial support is available through our dynamic monthly lung cancer support group, run by the Department of Social Work. Medical and psychosocial support for smoking cessation is also available to our patients.

Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every patient with lung cancer or other thoracic malignancies sees the right physicians in the appropriate order, gets the appropriate diagnostic tests, and fully understands the diagnosis and treatment options. Our team is dedicated in its fight against lung cancer, and believes in combining expert opinion with state-of-the art technology to provide compassionate and holistic care to our patients.
