Histopathology and Tissue Shared Resource
Molecular Pathology Laboratory (MPL)
The MPL interacts closely with the Human Tissue Bank to provide
sectioned blocks and provide services for research.
The MPL services include:
1. Histopathology Laboratory.
- Routine services for:
- Tissue fixation and processing.
- Paraffin block sectioning.
- Frozen block sectioning.
- Tissue staining.

- Customized services to meet particular research goals.
- Consultation and advice for fixation and tissue preparation
to help meet research goals.
- The Resource operates a "Tissue Arrayer" to make tissue
micro array (TMA).
- The process creates paraffin blocks with up to 200 to
600 cores of tissue embedded in a single block.
- TMAs can be used for large numbers of patients (or
animals) on one slide for profiling cancer, normal tissues,
and other applications.
- Enhance our capability to ask tissue-related questions
simply at a substantially reduced cost, and compare large
numbers of samples side-by-side on the same slide.
- Applications for screening for:
- Protein expression--IHC, immunofluorescence
- In situ hybridization
- FISH
