Membership in the LCCC
Mission
The mission of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer
Center (LCCC) is to provide expert and
humanitarian care to cancer patients, their
families, and those at risk, and to bring an
increased understanding of the cellular and
molecular biology of the malignant process and
the individual's and society's response to it.
LCCC members, under support form the National
Institutes of Health Cancer Center Support Grant
(CCSG), and many other federal government,
foundation, corporate, and private grants are
critical to the mission.
LCCC and MedStar, a Working Partnership
Since the establishment of the Lombardi Cancer
Center in 1970, Georgetown University (GU) has
maintained a high level of commitment to the
success of the Cancer Center. With CCSG support
and guided by its external and internal advisory
committees, the LCCC has developed and
maintained an outstanding interdisciplinary team
of basic, population-based, and clinical
researchers who are committed to high quality
and clinically relevant cancer research. The
success of Lombardi's research environment is
demonstrated in its three basic science
programs, two clinical translational programs,
and two population-based prevention and control
programs. Currently, the LCCC is represented by
approximately 160 full Members (full time,
established cancer researchers), participating
in 7 specific research programs with 11 shared
resources, working primarily on the GU campus.
In 2000, GU Hospital became part of MedStar
Health, a non-profit network of seven regional
hospitals, which together see more than 7,000
new cancer patients annually. This affiliation
has significantly strengthened both clinical
activity and clinical research at LCCC.
Membership
Accordingly, the LCCC is interested in expanding
its range of research programs and membership.
Specifically, LCCC is now reaching out to all
faculty who are only beginning to develop their
cancer research programs and to clinical faculty
who would like to make the commitment to enroll
patients on GU/MedStar Health cancer clinical
trials.
To accomplish this transition, LCCC has
recently added a new category of membership, the
Associate Member, to promote collaborations and
clinical trials accrual by faculty throughout
the MedStar hospital system. Accordingly,
Associate Membership is now available to
interested GU/MedStar faculty, throughout the
entire MedStar Network.
Working together, Members and Associate
Members of the LCCC will carry out the vital
missions of our Cancer Center.
