Cancer Control Program

Pediatric Cancer Prevention and Control

The Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center's Pediatric Cancer Prevention and Control research activities are led by Dr. Kenneth Tercyak and represent a collection of youth- and family-based studies of the biobehavioral aspects of cancer and cancer risk.

SHARE Program

The SHARE (Survivor Health and Resilience Education) Program is a health counseling program offered in cooperation with Children's National Medical Center and Georgetown University. Through the SHARE Program, survivors of childhood cancer receive information and counseling about eating healthy, exercising, living well, and other tips to stay healthy. This research is funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Eligibility for the SHARE Program is subject to change as research progresses. Eligibility is determined by the project team. Currently, our program criteria include:

  • adolescents between the ages of 11-18 years (parent permission required)

  • young adults between the ages of 19-21 years

  • completed all treatment for childhood cancer 1 or more years ago

  • completion of pre-enrollment screening

HABIT Survey Project

The HABIT (Health Attitudes, BehavIor & Tobacco) Survey Project is a study of the health behavior of children and adolescents seeking primary medical care, medical care for diabetes, and medical care for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Participants in HABIT are asked to complete a brief survey describing their background and health attitudes and behavior, and some participants are asked to provide a DNA sample to explore genes thought to relate to tobacco use. This research is funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Parent Communication Study

The Parent Communication Study (PCS) is a study of the social, psychological, and decision-making outcomes among mothers participating in BRCA1 and BRCA2 hereditary breast-ovarian cancer risk testing and their co-parents. Participants in PCS complete a series of telephone interviews prior to and following genetic counseling and testing services. This research is funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health.
