Cancer Control Program

Program Overview

Just as carcinogenesis is a multistage process, so is cancer control. Cancer control research spans the process leading to ultimate outcomes by conducting stepped research from risk factors and prevention, through early detection, to treatment and survivorship. The Lombardi Comprehensive Center's Cancer Control (CC) Program spans this entire spectrum of the cancer control process and is unique in its inclusion of populations across the lifespan - from childhood to older age - and translation from the cellular to the societal policy level.

Changing Behavior Across the Cancer Control Spectrum

The overall goal of the program is to develop, evaluate and disseminate innovative cancer control interventions designed to reduce the incidence, morbidity and mortality from cancer among high-risk populations.

Cancer Control focuses on two broad areas - health behaviors and health outcomes. These two complementary areas form the basis for interactive, integrative research within and across programs.

The specific aims of the program are:

  • To study the complex determinants of cancer behaviors along the spectrum of cancer control.

  • To use this knowledge to test behavior change interventions designed to reduce the burden of cancer in individuals, communities and populations.

  • To use these results to inform clinical practice and health policy debates about the most effective and cost-effective methods to improve cancer outcomes in diverse groups.
