SCIENTIFIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Key accomplishments over the past year include the following:
Genetic Risk and Behavior Change

Publication of key papers establishing the clinical feasibility and impact of offering rapid genetic counseling and testing to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients (Schwartz et al, 2005)

Publication of first prospective studies evaluating the long-term quality of life impact of prophylactic mastectomy among breast cancer patients (Tercyak et al, in press; Graves et al, in press).

Collaboration with Breast Cancer (BC) Program (C. Isaacs) to develop the Jess and Mildred Fisher Center for Familial Cancer Research.

Collaboration with the BC Program (C. Isaacs)/MedStar (Washington Hospital Center, Franklin Square Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital) to develop the Clinical Cancer Genetics Service.

Expansion of genetics research to include collaboration with the Georgetown Public Policy Institute on research focused on policy issues related to genetic testing.

Naming of Dr. Schwartz to the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications of Genetic Testing Section of the NIH.
Smoking Research

Conduct the first randomized-controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the most widely used internet-based smoking cessation program (RO1 CA 104836, Graham).

Dr. Tercyak’s leadership role in a tobacco control conference focused on medically at-risk youth supported by NCI (R13CA117417).
Early Detection
Treatment Research

Publication by Dr. Mandelblatt of the first paper examining the role of shared decision making in older breast cancer patients (Mandelblatt et al, 2006)

Participation in a DOD Center of Excellence (A. Neuget PI- Columbia) to examine the policy implications of disparities in chemotherapy use in Black women.
Survivorship and End of Life Care

Continued partnership with the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) to study patterns of care for older survivors. (J. Mandelblatt and C. Isaacs, BC).

Renewal of KO5 Senior Cancer Control Scientist Award to Dr. Mandelblatt to study survivorship outcomes of older women with breast cancer.
