Anton Wellstein, MD, PhD
Professor of Oncology and Pharmacology, Associate Director for Basic Science

Dr. Anton Wellstein directs a basic research laboratory with a strong interest in translational research. He is the Chair of the Division of Biochemistry and Pharmacology in the Department of Oncology. Dr. Wellstein has worked in cancer research for the past 15 years, with a particular focus on tumor cell/stromal interaction through growth factors. Prior to that, he trained in pharmacology (seven years) and clinical medicine (seven years). Dr. Wellstein is a member of the CAMP/Path C NIH study section and served on the Cell Biology study section of the American Cancer Society and on NIH SPORE study sections.

Dr. Wellstein has initiated numerous national and international collaborations with other academic institutions and the biotech industry to foster the translation of basic research from the laboratory into clinical utility at the diagnostic or therapeutic level.

John Marshall, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine and Oncology, Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology

Dr. John Marshall is the Clinical Research co-Leader for MTDT and Associate Director of Clinical Research at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Marshall is a clinician dedicated to the performance of high-quality translational clinical research. His areas of interest and research include angiogenesis, signal transduction, and, more recently, vaccine-based therapies. His work has been funded through three NCI grants, including two R01 grants. As Clinical co-Leader of MTDT, he has overseen a significant number of translational Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, including several "first trials in man," industry-supported Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, and multiple investigator-initiated studies. Dr. Marshall also directs the new Lombardi-MedStar Oncology Research Network.
