In line with the vision, mission and core values founded in the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or “care of the whole person,” the new Surgical Oncology Division will serve as an essential component of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, its Department of Surgery and Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is pleased to announce the arrival of Waddah B. Al-Refaie, MD, FACS, as the founding chief of surgical oncology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and surgeon in chief of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The new Division of Surgical Oncology has special expertise in the following conditions:
- Gastrointestinal cancers
- Stomach/gastric cancer
- Gastrointestinal stromal tumors
- Soft tissue sarcoma
- Malignant melanoma
- Geriatric surgical oncology
The Division of Surgical Oncology is driven to provide premier and research-driven surgical oncology care to our community. This premise resonates from the collective expertise at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center— the area's only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and one of only 41 in the nation.
