Program Overview

Georgetown University has been consistently ranked in the Top 10 Institutions Worldwide conducting breast cancer research by ESI Thompson Scientific, publishers of the ISI Science Citation Index. Georgetown Lombardi's Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research is home to many of the top breast cancer researchers and clinicians in the United States. Currently, Georgetown Lombardi is ranked 6th in the world for breast cancer publications, which total over 500 in the past ten years alone. The Breast Cancer (BC) Program is a clinical translational program co-led by a breast cancer medical oncologist who studies familial genetics and prevention of breast cancer (Dr. Claudine Isaacs), and a basic scientist who studies molecular endocrinology and drug resistance (Dr. Robert Clarke). Program members are an interdisciplinary group of basic scientists, translational scientists, and clinicians involved in studies ranging from preclinical models to breast cancer treatment and outcomes. Program members address three integrated specific aims:

Aim 1: To identify new mechanisms in the initiation and progression of breast cancer, integrating molecular and cellular analyses of preclinical models and human specimens.

Aim 2: To investigate the effects of environmental and genetic risk factors for breast cancer in experimental models and humans.

Aim 3: To test, in the clinical setting, new methods for prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
