The nurse navigators are registered nurses with a specialty in cancer care. The navigator serves as the primary contact for patients during the consultation and treatment phases of their cancer treatment journey at Georgetown. The nurse navigators demonstrate the Georgetown mission and culture of a holistic approach to every patient.
The nurse navigator provides essential education to help patients and their family understand their cancer care, especially during the intial phase of treatment - whether their care includes standard therapy or a clinical trial. The goal of the nurse navigator role is to minimize the time spent in the initial phase of the evaluation and treatment process, in order to maximize treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Additionally, the nurse navigator is able to provide patients and their family information and support as their personal care plan is developed and launched. Lombardi's approach to cancer care is multidisciplinary, an essential key to success in complex cancer evaluation and treatment. As an expert clinician, the navigator is able to facilitate the complexity of the treatment planning process with proper referral and connection to consulting specialists in a timely manner.
Guided by the nurse navigator, patients will be seen in a multidisciplinary clinic that includes:
- Surgical oncologists
- Medical oncologists
- Radiation oncologists
